The Sianti Gallery at booth L22 is participating in the exhibition “Tondo,” a group exhibition featuring circular artworks in painting and sculpture. Specifically, the twenty-one artists participating have crafted their compositions on round canvases of various sizes or have created prominent circular sculptures using glass, bronze, and metal. This form and shape were exceptionally popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. We refer to the well-known “tondo” from the word “rotondo,” meaning circle. It symbolizes the perfect shape representing the universe, the sun, the moon, and the planets, and it inspired painters such as Raphael, Michelangelo, and Bronzino.

 

It is noteworthy that in this artistic innovation, the artists responded with enthusiasm, as the round surface allowed them to reveal that art is ultimately inherent in human nature. Moreover, it is the ultimate symbol of the circle of life for humans and the cyclical path of history or the fate of mortals, as believed by Herodotus and Thucydides. It is indicative that within the circle’s shape and the “cycloidos” panel, all forms of painting can fit: from the most realistic representation to the most lyrical abstraction and from freehand writing to the precision of geometric shapes. From discipline to the most liberating gesture. In other words, everything! That’s why we want the way the works are set up to remind us of the combinations of constellations in a night sky through which our viewer also moves and travels!
