“Ajax: The artworks of the theatrical play”

14 January - 18 January 2023

This spectacular presentation is not just a visual narration. It is also a personal, archetypical version of life.

On Saturday, January 14 at 12:00, Sianti Gallery, continuing its original, thematic exhibitions which have been welcomed by viewers and critics alike, is now proposing a merging of painting with the theatre, of sketching with prose, based on Sofoklis’ tragedy “Ajax”. Driven by our love for culture, we proudly present the exhibition “Ajax: The artworks of the theatrical play” which brings into the spotlight all the archetypic issues of life and art.

A breathtaking performance directed by Giorgos Nanouris at Alkionis Theatre, a live dialogue between two of the most noble artistic gernes, acting and painting. Michalis Sarantis, an actor awarded with the Horn Award, will be performing nine different roles. We will watch him alternating between Ajax and Ulysses, Menelaos and Agamemnon, Tefkros, Tekmisa, the Messenger and the intervening goddess Athena. At the same time, painter and collaborator of Sianti Gallery Apostolos Chantzaras will bring on stage the glass table of his atelier, creating the play’s sceneries via a series of monotypes. Each monotype will be hung on stage, accompanying the narration while the artist embarks on a dialogue with the audience in his own special way.

During each performance, Apostolos Chantzaras will be creating six independent and original works which will become the sceneries for Sofoklis’ tragedy, symbolizing the causality and wholeness of things like the totality of life and death. And since art is, perhaps, our only right by which we can explore the circle of life, Chantzaras will offer the audience the opportunity to acquire his monotypes, which bear something of our own personal experiences. It is an exhibition revolving – consciously or unconsciously – around very deep issues.

It certainly goes beyond skillfulness, decoration or a monothematic depiction of things, searching instead for archetypes. In other words, it touches the ideal forms. Yet, the bodies and shapes themselves, which Chantzaras is obliged to use as a tool of expression, are creating the highest of expectations. At the end of the day, this spectacular presentation is not just a visual narration. It is also a personal, archetypical version of life. Whether it is successful or not, you can judge for yourselves from January 14 to January 18, at Sianti Gallery (2 Vass. Alexandrou and Michalakopoulou Str., behind the National Gallery)

Part of the revenues will be given to the “Actor’s House”.
